DIRECTOR of FINANCE
The Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago, headed by Cardinal Francis George, Archbishop of Chicago, desires to attract a professional and experienced Director of Finance. The position is a key member of the Cardinal’s staff. The individual will work within a broad range of financial and administrative activities, which includes responsibility for the overall financial plans and policies of the Archdiocese as well as a variety of administrative and support activities. This position will be the key financial advisor to the Archbishop of Chicago and the ministries within the Archdiocese and will be a Canon law appointment according to Canon 494. The Director of Finance has access and interaction with the Archbishop of Chicago and reports directly to the Chancellor.
He/She will have direct reports to oversee the accounting, treasury, budget, construction, insurance and audit functions, as well as serving as the primary liaison and staff support and counsel to the Archdiocesan Finance Council. He/She will have specific responsibility for safeguarding the Archdiocese assets and for insuring that an adequate system of internal controls is in place. In addition, as a department head and member of the Cardinal’s administrative council, the successful candidate will fully participate in the financial decision making process of the Archdiocese as well as provide financial counsel to members of the senior management team. In addition to an internal focus, the individual must interface with numerous outside advisors including external auditors and commercial bankers.
The successful candidate will work with Department Heads, Vicars, Pastors, Principals, Programs and Agencies to create an environment of open and honest financial communication and to foster focus on mission tempered by financial realism and discipline.
The ideal candidate must have at least 15 years experience in a similar senior management position in a large complex organization with a record of progressive and relevant financial accomplishments. Experience within the not-for-profit industry is desired but not necessary. The candidate must be a practicing Catholic and must have an understanding of the Catholic Church and the role and ministry of the Archbishop. Experience and involvement at the local Catholic Parish level would be an advantage. The position requires an undergraduate degree and a basic understanding of accounting principles. A CPA and/or an advanced degree such as an MBA would be highly desirable.
The successful candidate must have a demonstrated track record of working successfully with diverse constituencies and client groups and within complex religious and social environments.
